“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” – Helen Keller
Have you been to several dermatologists and received the same response each time? “There is no cure for this condition; we are sorry.” I have. Several years ago when I started showing symptoms of vitiligo, I visited dermatologists who were unable to diagnose my condition, rather, gave generic skin ointments that did not help repigment my skin. This could certainly be due to lack of widespread knowledge about vitiligo and its symptoms. However, there is good news now. With enough research it is possible to find the right dermatologist who has experience and knowledge about vitiligo and treating the condition. With a little bit of faith and patience, we can find the right dermatologist.
When I moved to Plano, TX, I joined as an 8th grader in middle school. I was doing a research project for my school and decided I wanted to focus on my own condition- vitiligo. To guide me through my project, I needed a mentor, so I started to research local dermatologists; I was lucky to find a vitiligo specialist in the DFW metroplex. I contacted UT Southwestern and requested to meet with Dr. Pandya. He not only gave me a lot of confidence, but also helped me with my treatment plan towards a cure. He also gave me a lot of information about vitiligo and the research happening related to this condition in America and around the world.
There are only few dermatologists in all of America who actually specialize in vitiligo, Dr. Pandya being one of them. This is why it is difficult to find a dermatologist at a local clinic or hospital who can provide us with a treatment plan.
The best way is to look up nearby dermatology clinics or hospitals, and call them and ask specifically about specialists with knowledge of vitiligo. There may be specialists who know about vitiligo and who can help suggest a treatment plan. The dermatology clinic at UT Southwestern is a great resource for anyone with vitiligo to start researching about vitiligo specialists.
