Cover-up!

Product Information:

Finding the perfect shade of makeup that matches your skin tone can be a challenge. But with a little bit of time and effort, you can find the perfect match! For me, it took a few trips to different makeup stores before I found a foundation that fit my skin tone.

There is a plethora of shades available at various stores. Each brand offers a different shade. While a certain brand might work for one person, it may not work for another. Many vitiligo patients are recommended to use Dermablend. However, I found that Dermablend does not have good shades for darker skin tones. The shades they offer appear very orange-ish. It works for some people but it does not match people with greyish undertones.

When I first decided I wanted to use makeup on my face, I went to Sephora to find a cover-up. A professional welcomed me and when I explained why I wanted to use cover-up she was very understanding and committed to helping me find a perfect shade of makeup. Since I have a brown skin tone, it was a challenge to find a color that didn’t look very artificial since I have a grey undertone. Most shades of cover-up have an orange undertone that is clearly visible on darker skin tones. The very first cover-up I found at Sephora was a concealer. It looked really orange on my face so I stopped using it after two months. I then went to Dillard’s to find a different brand since Dillard’s has a variety of options to choose from.   Again, a professional helped me match a shade with my skin tone. The brand that worked best for me was Estee Lauder. The makeup consultant suggested a product of maximum coverage. It differs from other brands since it is a denser paste. The foundation was not perfect since it appeared to have an orange shade on my face, so I decided to use another foundation coupled with one I got from Dillard’s. At Target, I found a foundation that had a lighter shade with a more greyish undertone. When blended with the darker foundation, it matches my skin tone very well.

Information about the products I use can be found at the bottom of this post.

How to Apply Makeup:

There are several techniques that can be used to apply makeup. I like to use my finger and a foundation brush. If you decide to use a foundation brush, make sure you get a wide one since it makes application over large spots easy and it evenly blends the makeup. First, I apply cream on my face. This makes it easier to spread the makeup so it blends with the skin tone. The spots will not be seen if the makeup is applied evenly. Then, I apply the lighter foundation to the spots with my finger. On top of the lighter foundation I apply the darker foundation with a foundation brush. Since both of them are liquid mediums, they blend quite easily. It is important to spread the foundation evenly so the makeup doesn’t appear too patchy. Some people like to use a foundation powder over the paste. This makes it stay on for a longer period of time. I found that a powder is not necessary since the maximum coverage paste I use stays on for about 24 hours.

The durability of makeup may vary from brand to brand. The one I found stays for a long time. Sometimes I fall asleep with my makeup on; when I wake up in the morning the makeup isn’t smudged too much. I can even wear my makeup whenever I go swimming. The makeup doesn’t wash off since it is waterproof. I use makeup remover to remove the foundation.

I hope this information was useful for those of you who are looking for makeup as an option for covering up vitiligo spots. Good luck!
